How much bark we will get: The trees are mostly young trees ranging from 4 - 8 inches in diameter. They may be close together so our host Gail will cut the trees for us to work on. We can get inner and outer bark. Consider bringing a thank you gift for our host (e.g. a small basket).

Description: Cyanide? Not this tree species. Prunus emarginata (common names: bitter cherry, wild cherry, and quinine cherry) is a member of the genus (Prunus) that produces a poison - hydrogen cyanide - which gives almonds a characteristic flavor. This toxin is mainly found in seeds and leaves, and has no bitter taste.

Although no specific mention has been seen for this species, all members of the genus, Prunus, contain Amygdailin and Prunasin; substances which break down in water to form hydrocyanic acid (cyanide or prussic acid). Since we are only gathering the bark, the above mentioned is for your information only. Prunus emarginata is native to Oregon.

Registrants will be emailed a more precise location for the gathering, closer to the gathering date.

Clothing: The area is semi wetland so boots are a good choice. Dress for rain or shine.

Tools: Sharp knife, garden clippers, clips or clothes pins to clip the inner and outer bark together. Folding chair. Drinking water.
