Basic Basketry Techniques: Reed Heart Basket

Date and time: Saturday, February 1, 2025. 10 am – 2:30 pm PST

Location: Multnomah Arts Center (7688 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland, OR), Room TBD

Cost: $19 (includes $9 class fee and $10 materials fee)

Maximum number of students: 12

Tools needed: Water spray bottle, old towel, small water bucket/basin, 5-10 small clips, and scissors for cutting reed

Description: Explore the basics of weaving a simple basket with this fun mini-heart design. Perfect for a Valentine's or birthday gift for a special friend or family member! No weaving experience needed. This class will cover weaving a heart-shaped base with flat reed spokes, single twining the sides, and finishing with a simple lashed rim with sea grass. Colors will be available if you want to add them, for additional interest on the sides. We will use flat reed, cane, plain & colored round reed, and sea grass. Your finished project will be 5 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 2 1/4".

About Your Instructor

Diane Shingledecker has been weaving baskets for the past ten years. She enjoys weaving with a wide variety of materials and incorporating new techniques and fibers into her work. Several of her baskets are currently on display in the Village Gallery of Arts (VGA) in Beaverton. During the summer of 2024, her baskets were part of the Washington County Summer Art Showcase at the Brookwood library and also at the Multnomah Arts Center as a member of CBBG. Diane has been an active member of CBBG for quite a few years. She taught computer classes at PCC for over 18 years and in her spare time, taught community classes in crafts & cooking. Newly retired, she is thrilled to be able to share her joy for basketry with new weavers in beginning basketry classes!
