June General Meeting, Online via Zoom: Catalan Basketry with George Hart

About the program:

George Hart will discuss the basket classes he took in Spain last year, as well as basic Catalan history and the Salt basketry fair. The fair offered a great variety of techniques and materials used by many Catalan, Spanish, and international makers plus there were demonstrations, exhibitions, activities, and workshops.

George grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. He is a recently retired fish and wildlife biologist. George has devoted many years to the gathering, harvesting, and preparation of native materials with his wife, Jo Ann, before he developed an interest in basket making.

He has studied with Native American master basket maker and Suquamish elder Ed Carriere and other fiber artists. George has taken numerous classes with Katherine Lewis and a class with Bill Roeder for skeined willow. He has also studied carving with Duane Pasco. His preferred techniques are coiling, twining, and working with willow.
