Basket Day in the Park 2021: An exploration of natural materials

Two locations: Mary S. Young Park, West Linn, Oregon and a private residence in King City, Oregon

At Basket Day the Guild pays the class fee, member pay the material fee.

Bring your own:  water bottle, face covering, chair

All classes are appropriate for all skill levels. Classes will be either outside at the park or in the garage and driveway tent with plenty of air circulation; students will be physically distanced. Each student will be able to take only one class (due to COVID-19, classes will not run concurrently). All classes require sign-up by August 1. Check your CBBG newsletter, The Ultimate Weft, for details. Payment will be at the event but pre-registration is required.

CLASS:  Iris Leaves with Barbara Kommer

Learn about growing, harvesting, drying, and preparing Siberian (and other) iris leaves. Make a small jute and iris leaf basket

Class length: 3 hours. 9am- 12 pm. Location: Mary S. Young Park

Tools: scissors, towel, spray bottle, small packing tool

Other things to bring:  a chair, a small table (due to COVID-19 precautions there will only be room for 1-2 students at each picnic table)

Material cost: $ 8 (bring to class)

CLASS: Textured Basket in Natural Materials with Rosey Covert

Use a variety of natural materials including barks, grasses, leaves, pine needles, palm inflorescence and other natural materials

Use twining, 3 and 4 rod wale and plaiting to create texture and dimension. The emphasis will be on changing shape, pattern and material to create unique and gorgeous baskets

Class length: 3 hours, 12:30 pm- 3:30pm.  Location: Mary S. Young Park

Tools: scissors, large eye needle, awl, small clips

Other things to bring: a chair, a small table (due to COVID-19 precautions there will only be room for 1-2 students at each picnic table)

Material cost: $ 15(bring to class)

CLASS: Gourd Prep 101 with Jane Wilson

Location:  Jane’s house in King City (address will be provided)

Learn how to prepare a hard-shell gourd straight from the garden to ready to weave. We will cover cleaning inside and out, leveling, design, cutting, and simple finish with latched philodendron sheath rim. Repairs of cracks and holes will be covered. Tools for leveling, cleaning, cutting, sanding and finishing will be provided. 

Material fee will include 1 gourd, 1 philodendron sheath, choice of natural material for embellishment and step-by-step printed instructions. 

Class length: 3 hours. 9 am-12pm  

Tools: Cordless drill (if you have one), dust mask (required), pencil, tape measure, compass, awl, Wet Ones wipes, clips, apron. Also bring a chair.

Material cost: $ 20 (bring to class)
