CBBG will sponsor a Sweetgrass Gathering Sunday, August 29, 2021. We will meet at 11 am. This gathering is for members only.
The total drive time from the greater Portland area is about 2 hours. Use Goggle Maps to route your trip. Enter your destination as "Bayocean Dike Road" and you are on your way. At Tillamook drive out of town to Bayocean Dike Road, another 25-30 minutes. Turn right down Bayocean Dike Road to the parking lot. If you get to the lighthouse, you have gone too far. We will walk about 1 mile from the parking lot to the gathering site. There is a $10 day-use parking fee at the parking lot. This is in addition to the CBBG gathering fee.
Cost for this gathering opportunity is $10. Registration and payment are online at www.basketryguild.org. Payment is non-refundable.
Please note that members are not permitted to gather at this site on their own. CBBG gets a permit on behalf of the Guild and only Guild-organized picking is covered by the permit.
Bring:
- A broomstick or rod to stabilize your sweetgrass bundle so that it does not bend or kink
- Cloth strips to tie your sweetgrass bunch
- Drinking water and/or snack
- Shoes or boots that you don’t mind getting wet
- A change of shoes and socks for the drive home
Please review this general protocol:
· Gather from clumps as far upland as possible, or from the upland side of the clump rather than the waterside to avoid miring
· Avoid trampling - Gather from the clump edges rather than from the middle. If you want a piece from the middle, reach into the clump to gather rather than stepping on or into the clump
· Pull every piece from near the ground
· Replant any roots that may be accidently pulled
· Don’t pull only from one spot or within one clump; pull randomly from within a clump and move around
When you get home untie the sedge and spread it out in the sunny place to start the drying process. When it is dry, store it inside where it is dry.
Limits on gathering:
The resource is finite. The amount of sweetgrass you may gather depends on the number of members present at the gathering and the condition of the sweetgrass. Also, the guild will have one other gathering later in the year. Please take no more than what you need for your own basket making needs. If the event coordinator determines that the sweetgrass supply at the site is being depleted or the conditions are such that too many are being pulled out with the roots, the coordinator has the discretion to stop the gathering at any time.
Should your plans change and you are not able to participate, please let us know so that we are not waiting for you. There are no refunds for no-shows.
