March Zoom-In – 10 Classes in 5 Days!

Day 1: Tuesday, March 12

NOTE: You may take both Anne Bowers’ Church’s Oval basket (Tuesday and Thursday) and Sheila and Elaine’s Small Waste Basket (Tuesday and Wednesday). Or you may take either Jane Wilson’s Seashells and Knotless Netting OR Susan Hanks’ Stairway. To see a list of all 2024 Zoom-In classes and any overlapping schedules, click here.

The last day to register is Thursday, February 8, 2024. This also is the last day for refunds. We will take names for a waiting list when a class fills, until February 8. Email ColumbiaBasinBasketryGuild@gmail.com with the class name and your contact information to be put on the wait list. March Zoom-In classes are open to CBBG members, and non-members. Materials will be mailed to registrants; sorry, no option for Canadians.

 
Church's Oval Double-wall Basket with Anne Bowers (2-day class)

Description: This striking basket, 7 x15, is double walled. The inner basket features shades of space-dyed red reed in various sizes of weavers. The exterior basket is woven in natural reed with a zigzag pattern woven in. It is later overlaid with the same space-dyed reed used on the inside. It has a cat’s head base, dyed rim fillers, red leather handles, and an interesting rim lashing. A very substantial basket, it is an easier type of double wall to weave because of its construction.

Tools needed: Bucket for water, awl, shears, pencil, measuring tape, knife or scarfing tool. *We strongly encourage you to have a second (smartphone) camera over your workspace for demonstration, questions, and problem solving. Seashells and Knotless Netting with Jane Wilson

Description: Learn to coil using seagrass and waxed linen thread on the rim of a gourd, then drop down to the body of the gourd and cover it with knotless netting. Lash wool roving to the rim and embellish with pre-drilled seashells and beads. Kit includes: 5 - 5 1/2" gourd (metallic finish with matching interior), seagrass, wool roving, needles, drill bit, waxed linen thread, beading thread, 6/0 beads, Tiger tape, pre-drilled seashells.

Tools needed: Drill, awl, scissors, pencil, apron, small clamps large enough to go over the edge of the gourd and cord. *We strongly encourage you to have a second (smartphone) camera over your workspace for demonstration, questions, and problem solving. Small Waste Basket with Sheila Wray and Elaine Twogood (2-day class)

Description: This is an attractive small waste basket, 7"w x 11"h x 10"d, woven over a plastic form that can remain or be removed once completed. It is woven from a slotted wooden base, using both plaiting and twining varieties in both natural and dyed reed. A couple of rim choices will be given. Students will be encouraged to experiment with a variety of weaves to achieve a personal look.

Tools needed: Small spring clamps, knife, pencil, spray bottle, towel, dishpan or bucket for soaking materials, scissors or shears, needle nose pliers, tape measure, awl (short, packing tool). *We strongly encourage you to have a second (smartphone) camera over your workspace for demonstration, questions, and problem solving. Stairway: Full-turn Twining with Susan Hanks (2-day class)

Instructor: Susan Hanks

Description: This will be a small (3"h x 2"w x 2"d) Sally type round bag of polished hemp twine and yarn with a repeated pattern. Learn to follow a graph pattern, review twining, and learn full-turn twining with emphasis on clean color changes in this 2-day class.

Tools needed: Small scissors, small packing tool, tweezers or small hemostat, tapestry needle. *Required: a second (smartphone) camera over your workspace for demonstration, questions, and problem solving. This greatly aids the instructor, as well as helping you. You can use the DIY camera stand*
